c-ECO SYSTEM FELLOWSHIP / APPLICATION CASE 01

Anticipatory Governance

Amazon Region
Manaus

Flooding · Igarapé do Quarenta

A proposed case for learning and methodological development. The Amazon region provides the regional context; the defined corridor of the Igarapé do Quarenta in Manaus is the local setting. This case does not define the geographic limits of the overall Fellowship.

01 / REGION

The Amazonian regional context

The regional application is intended to support learning and future adaptations across the Amazon region, including other Amazonian countries. Its environmental, hydrological, institutional, social and linguistic context must be specified; Manaus is not assumed to represent the entire region.

Potential replication requires local partners, authorized sources, appropriate participation conditions and evidence suited to each setting. Portuguese and Spanish are proposed priorities for regional adaptation; English supports international learning and cooperation. Teaching and translation capacity remain to be confirmed.

Participants from elsewhere may study this case to learn the method. Their participation does not establish that Manaus parameters or thresholds are valid in their home territories.

What Manaus may contribute to the region

As the pilot progresses, reviewed outputs may support regional teaching: reusable documentation procedures, lessons about data gaps, dependency analysis, and exercises on governance and monitoring. Findings will only be presented as applicable beyond the local setting when their scope and limits have been assessed.

Hydrological parameters, thresholds and local performance measures require separate testing before use elsewhere. No validated pilot or regional results are claimed on this page at this stage.

02 / LOCAL SETTING

Igarapé do Quarenta in Manaus

The local scientific scope concerns a defined corridor and the relationships among flooding, drainage failures, erosion and sediment accumulation, sanitation pressures, land-cover change, riparian conditions, interconnected services and exposed populations.

Domain selection must use c-ECO’s canonical taxonomy and document cross-domain dependencies. Flooding is the occurrence, not an automatic domain code. Boundaries, assets, events and data sources must be established with local scientific input.

03 / SCIENTIFIC THEMES

Evidence for a locally grounded case

The proposed case brings together water and sanitation, hydrology and hydraulics, urban drainage, geospatial analysis, river dynamics, and social and territorial conditions. These fields help examine how an occurrence affects interconnected services and recovery capacity.

Scientific questions, data access and local participation must be established before educational materials are released. Candidate relationships, simulations and findings will be identified according to their actual evidence status.

The case is not presented as a system with demonstrated predictive performance. Simulated adaptation scenarios do not establish observed ecological effectiveness.

04 / EDUCATIONAL APPLICATION

Use pilot evidence within the common six modules

The case will supply activities on system definition, evidence architecture, data quality, monitoring and tests, governance, and adaptation. It uses the Fellowship’s common curriculum; the pilot’s six scientific work areas are not six separate educational modules.

Educational data must be authorized, documented, versioned and reviewed. Anonymization or aggregation may be required; held-out scientific test data must remain protected. Simulated examples must be clearly labeled and never presented as observed pilot findings.

The learning portfolio may support a future replication proposal. Admission to the Institute or SIL still requires an associated fellow and the applicable reviews and approvals.

05 / DEVELOPMENT

Prepare materials as evidence becomes available

Educational design may proceed alongside the pilot. Case materials will be prepared as suitable evidence becomes available and may use clearly identified simulations where appropriate.

Each educational release must be reviewed, authorized and dated. Later findings must not be retrospectively attributed to earlier exercises. Course duration and dates will be announced for each offering.

06 / PROPOSED COLLABORATION

Local knowledge and academic exchange

UFAM is a proposed academic interlocutor for scientific contextualization, case development and possible university extension activities, subject to institutional agreement. The overall Fellowship also explores academic collaboration with WashU.

No institutional partnership, joint certificate or university endorsement is confirmed. Confirmed roles and participation arrangements will be presented when agreed.

Scholarship opportunities may support access to this application. Terms will be published when available; participation does not guarantee completion or credentialing.
